Death of a Camel

Tonight, I saw sad stairways to heaven:
One hundred thousand stars blazed the way high above one last, leafless mango tree.
Their camels groaned and died as refugees.
Both in their abandon.
Fragrant wood-smoke of despair drifted across the cooling Sahel night
carried on the dwindling murmur of their hopelessness.
