Princess on an Ottoman Highway

More stilling than silence,
the cicada thrilled through the high gloom of that great Slavonian forest.
Pygmy ripples raced the bubbling brook’s meander
to mingle beneath the shadows of her oaken bough
at the swirling river’s edge,
where, once,
harried majesty had dipped a golden toe
and dreamed of home.
